Eyo is a masquerade that is used to celebrate in Yoruba culture is popular within celebrations in Lagos State. The Eyo Festival, also known as the Adamu Orisha Play, is a Yoruba festival unique to Lagos, Nigeria and has a strong historical roots in Iperu-Remo, a town in Ogun State. The Eyo is used to represent spirits. The Eyos are covered in white cloth and no part of the Eyos are meant to be seen. The Eyo holds a palm branch called Opambata. The Eyo wears an Akete hat and different Eyos have different colour Aketes that represent their different groups. There are five different Eyos, each distinguished by their unique hats: White Hat (Èyò Àdìmú), Red Hat (Èyọ Alakétèpùpa), Yellow Hat (Èyò Oníko), Green Hat (Èyò Ọlọgèdè) and Purple Hat (Èyò Àgéré). The Red Akete shown in this painting signifies power and enforcement and historically tasked with maintaining order.
